Quilt While You’re Ahead

Vendor Booth Branding

Concept

QWYA is a small vendor booth at Austin Gift Company that specializes in bringing new life to well loved quilts. Old patterns are sewn into pillows, totes, cards, flourishes on jackets, and more.

Challenge

To develop a versatile brand, including a logo, brand colors, business cards, and other complimentary design elements.

Initial Thoughts

So, full disclosure, this was for my mom. She had realized that many of the most successful booths at AGC had developed their own brand, and she wanted help creating something that captured the cross between traditional craft and modern application.

Sketches

Sketching left me with three strong Ideas, each inspired by the idea of not quitting while you are ahead, but continuing your fight, streak, or passion.

1. Quilted boxing gloves. 2.a Vegas style sign. And 3. a house with the lights on in the middle of the night.

Digital Drafts

Round 1

Along with the house and boxing gloves directions, I iterated a few ideas that focused on cutting a shape out of a quilt pattern.

Round 2

Ultimately, after some peer review, one design was unanimously praised for its simplicity and effectiveness. I changed the form slightly for the color version, and experimented with different color ways. After many color iterations, I landed on a combination of peachy pink and agate teal.

Finals

Reflection

I had actually developed a lot of this brand without telling my mom, and so I was very pleasantly surprised by her response in the end. We were both surprised how much it captured what she was looking for, even without consistent communication between every iteration. I believe this project showed me just how important trying the wrong thing (the boxing gloves) is one of the best ways help my mind discover unconventional but relevant solutions.
